當醫生，是一位已過世老農對我的期望，曾經因年少輕狂的反叛，執意拒絕父親的本意當醫生，卻又因浪蕩過了，面對現實，重拾書本。時隔卅年餘，依稀可見書上「不當醫生，就捲舖蓋回家種田」幾個字。回想學醫過程，從懵懂到現實，又從現實到理想，內心有著衝突與轉折。
1980年進入國泰醫院實習，時值整形外科在台灣萌芽，眼見斷指可以顯微鏡手術神奇的重接。因緣際會，照顧了一位因電擊造成截肢及全身百分之五十灼傷的少年，歷經無數次清創及植皮手術得以痊癒。當他露出難得笑容出院的同時，仍依依不捨說：「醫師謝謝您。」剎時內心的震撼無比的強烈，回想他剛入院時，在生死間搏鬥，終從死神手中搶回寶貴的生命，但當每次換藥時總是以歌唱來轉移肉體的痛苦。第一次體會到整形外科原來也是濟世救人的科系。
在外科全盛時期，1981年順利考進了長庚外科，接觸了頭頸部的腫瘤切除與重建，更眼見神奇的唇顎裂手術及先天畸型的顱顏手術，有如移山倒海，整形外科已深植我心，也為我的外科生涯做了第一次選擇，好不容易接受了三年的一般外科及三年的整形外科訓練。原本想追隨恩師羅慧夫醫師，用愛來修補唇顎裂，可惜名額有有限。未能如願，也算是醫學生涯的第一件憾事。
上帝眷顧為我開另一扇門。由於恩師的遠見與強力支持，1990年遠赴美國維吉尼亞醫學院修習乳房整形及泌尿系統重建一年。返國後戮力於所學也稍有所成，更蒙前陳昱瑞院長提拔，得以領導一般整形外科及美容整形中心。正當科務發展之際，醫療環境的改變，健保給付制度的擠壓以及科際間的排擠效應，眼見所學已漸無法在大環境下做更多的貢獻，心想：「人生不可能沒有遺憾，但要活得精采。」於是，毅然的離開了長庚。雖是遺憾，但也算是打開了另一扇門，這樣的結局，也只能說是一種偶然。
史懷哲的聖行是醫者最崇高的原始使命，但人畢意不只有生命，生活的崇高意境是人類追求的最高層次。醫生的存在價值，不只在於解決人們的病痛，也在滿足人們精神上的需求，據此美容外科醫生，不也是手執手術刀的心理醫生嗎？筆者以為，只要心存善念，遵循醫學倫理，任何科別的醫生都可以成為令人尊敬的史懷哲。
